An Infinitely Improbable Puzzle Hunt (Fall 2013)

Inspiration: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (book series by Douglas Adams)

Plot: Teams of 2-4 have been gathered who plays an organization called Mission-Oriented Inter-Space Travel (MOIST). MOIST has intercepted a message from outer space. They decipher a bit of it to discover that a group of aliens is planning to destroy the Earth in order to construct an intergalactic superhighway. MOIST wants to send a message back to the aliens alerting them of Earth's population and desire to remain alive, but their broadcast system requires passwords which need to be cracked by solving puzzles. That's where the teams come in: by solving puzzles, MOIST gets closer to cracking into the radio broadcast system and thus saving Earth. With some legal assistance from an alien named Eccentrica (who is paying his way through stripper school by being a lawyer on the side), MOIST is eventually able to contact the aliens. The winning team, after contacting the aliens, realizes that a specific set of signatures and forms are required to request the cancellation of construction. The winning team solves a complicated go-to-next style legal jargon form and then goes on a runaround across campus to collect signatures from various alien departments. Despite the aliens threatening not to accept forms that aren't filled out in triplicate, the Earth is saved!

Poster:
A blue and white planet cropped at the top against a blue and black space background with little white stars. White text near the top reads
Dropbox sponsored this semester's hunt by providing money for pizza.
Media:
A crudely made drawing from MS Paint. A black background with yellow stars with a two-panel comic. Panel 1: the planet Earth and a red arrow pointing to the next panel. Panel 2: a white billboard with a hamburger and an exclamation point on it as well as a grey road in front of shards of the Earth.
This image, made by Chris Jones, was an intercepted message from the aliens.
