Pirate Treasure Hunt (Spring 2013)

Inspiration: pirates, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker (video game for Nintendo GameCube)

Plot: Small pirate crews of 2-4 have assembled on an island in the hopes of finding the most treasure. There, they have met a rag-tag team of pirates-for-hire (Hunt Staff members) who hope to get employed by the best pirates to get a cut of the booty. The pirate teams must solve puzzles in order to learn more about the location of the booty. The teams must also prove to the pirates-for-hire that they are talented pirate crews by solving interactive puzzles. After each of four interactive puzzles, the teams chose a pirate-for-hire to bring on as a crew member (either a Captain, Doctor, Lookout, and Navigator).

As they continue to solve, their newly hired teammates inform them that Ice Pirates (wights with freeze-tag powers who live on the island) have found out about their quest for booty and are preparing to hunt for this treasure as well. The winning team and their four hired pirates end up going on a runaround across campus where they are ambushed by the Ice Pirates. If the team can escape the Ice Pirates freezing powers, they end up reaching the X which marks the spot and finding the jackpot!

Plot Presentations' Background Music:
Although the hunt this semester had nothing to do with The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, we borrowed a few things from the game. The theme from the video game played while we introduced the hunt to players, and images from the game were used in the advertising posters. This video is a instrumental version of the song we used, On The Pirate Ship.

Pirates-for-Hire:
  • CEO Pirate: can offer her business savviness to teams
  • Peg-Leg Hook-Hands Pirate: one remaining limb but a heart of gold
  • Pittsburgh Pirate: great at stealing (bases)
  • Ghost Pirate: he's already dead, so he can't die!
  • Aristocrat-Turned-Pirate: very knowledgable about riches untold
  • Internet Pirate: a little more skilled with digital booty than most
  • Kid Pretending to be a Pirate: I'm a real pirate! Pick me! Pick me!
